The project for an art centre in Gabrovo named after Christo was first conceived 30 years ago by local organizations who advocated that the artist’s work be presented in his native town. In 2013 the Municipality of Gabrovo and Christo’s family concluded an agreement granting the town permission to establish a centre for contemporary art under Christo and Jeanne-Claudes’s names. The Municipality also received a donation of 50 signed project posters. After two successful exhibitions in 2017 (one dedicated to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s projects and another to his childhood in Gabrovo) in 2020 a team from the Museum of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo presented a preliminary concept for the future art centre.
The new institution will be located in a former textile technical school near the Museum of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo. The Centre for Contemporary Art “Christo and Jeanne-Claude” will show permanent and temporary exhibitions; it will have artist studios and a residency programme, event spaces, a cafe and a gift shop. The former school building, erected in the 1950s, has four floors and its built-up area is about 11 000 sq.m. With its high ceilings and spacious workshops it offers excellent conditions for exhibiting contemporary art.

The preliminary concept for the Centre was developed a team from the Museum of Humor and Satire with the support the Municipality of Gabrovo and local organizations. Future steps include meetings with Bulgarian and international partners to shape up a definitive scope and program, creating a brief for an architectural project or competition and organizing its subsequent implementation before 2027.
